The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a weak phreatic eruption at Taal Volcano, lasting for four minutes on May 8, 2024.

The smoke reached up to two kilometers from the crater.

“Ang cause nito would still be volcanic gases coming into contact with hot water, producing phreatic eruption,” Teresito 'Toto' Bacolcol, Director of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - PHIVOLCS.

No volcanic smog or vog was observed around Taal.

PHIVOLCS warned of possible future phreatic bursts due to the continuous emission of hot volcanic gases. However, the public should not be alarmed.

“Hindi naman ibig sabihin nito na magkakaroon na ng magmatic eruption, 'yung galing talaga sa ilalim ng magma coming up — hindi ito ganoon,” Bacolcol said.

The alert level for Taal remains at one.

PHIVOLCS said there is no reason to raise the alert level despite the phreatic eruption.

Access to Taal Volcano Island remains prohibited.
