The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued an official statement extending its condolences to the family of a Grade 10 learner in Maasin town, Iloilo Province who took his own life.

The student was devastated reportedly after receiving low grades in a subject labeled “Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan” (home and economics education). 

It was learned that the student’s marks in three grading periods are 64, 69, and 66, respectively because he reportedly failed to comply with the required projects.

“The Department of Education extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of a Grade 10 learner of Maasin, Iloilo, who sadly passed away last May 10, 2024. The Child Protection Committee of the said school is set to conduct psychosocial interventions for affected peers and teachers close to the said learner. The concerned school shall likewise coordinate with the appropriate authorities on the matter. In the meantime, while we wait for the official police report and findings, we appeal to the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed narratives as a sign of respect for the family in this time of grief,” the statement reads.

DepEd Central Office has ordered a thorough investigation on the incident.
