Schools in New Bataan, Davao de Oro shifted to blended learning after face-to-face classes in both public and private schools were suspended when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit the area on May 14, 2024.
Work in government offices were also suspended.
Mayor Geraldford Balbin suspended classes and government work to assess the possible damage caused by the tremor.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was tectonic in origin. Its epicenter was located in New Bataan and it had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Intensity IV was felt in New Bataan and Monkayo in Davao de Oro. Intensity III was experienced in Maco, Davao de Oro while Intensity I was felt in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
Instrumental intensity was also recorded in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro with Intensity II.
According to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), no major damage was reported due to the earthquake.
