[TRIGGER WARNING: SENSITIVE CONTENT]

An incident report on the death of a Grade 10 student in Maasin town, Iloilo Province, allegedly because of poor marks that he received in three grading periods, was submitted to the DepEd Central Office.

The reason on having poor grades is subject for validation, according to Leonilo Salvilla, spokesperson of DepEd Iloilo Province, in an interview with GMA Super Radyo Iloilo.

Salvilla said that the incident report presented details from the side of the parent, as well as the reply of the teacher to the accusation.

He said that teachers are guided by DepEd Order No. 8, Series of 2015, on requiring students to comply with three components to earn grades. These are written works, performance tasks, and quarterly assessment.

Salvilla said that learners move up to the next grade level based on the assessment of teachers. There are also available work immersion programs to assist students challenged by financial constraints.

It was learned that personnel from DepEd Iloilo Province visited the wake of the learner in his residence in Maasin to hand over assistance to his family.

64, 69, AND 66

The student was devastated reportedly after receiving low grades in a subject labeled “Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan” (home and economics education).

It was learned that the student’s marks in three grading periods are 64, 69, and 66, respectively because he reportedly failed to comply with the required projects citing financial challenges.

“The Department of Education extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of a Grade 10 learner of Maasin, Iloilo, who sadly passed away last May 10, 2024. The Child Protection Committee of the said school is set to conduct psychosocial interventions for affected peers and teachers close to the said learner," reads DepEd Central Office's official statement issued on May 12, 2024.
