A 56-year-old man died after the e-bike he was driving was hit by a delivery truck on the national highway in San Juan, Ilocos Sur.
Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the rider of the e-bike traveling along the outer lane of the national highway.
He then stopped, looked both ways, and prepared to cross the road. However, while he was crossing, he was struck by a delivery truck.
The impact threw the driver off his e-bike, and he hit his head on the pavement. He sustained severe head and body injuries, which led to his death.
Police said the truck driver saw the e-bike crossing, but when he tried to avoid it, the e-bike went towards the same direction where he swerved.
“Ang sabi nitong driver ng truck, nung nakita niyang [may] papatawid [ay] iniwasan niya, kaya lang yung pinuntahan ng e-bike doon din siya [papunta na direksyon]… kaya doon na sumalpok,” PMAJ. Benjamin Raquedan, Officer-in-Charge of the San Juan Police Station, said.
The truck driver said he was already too close to the e-bike that he was no longer able to step on the brakes.
“Bigla siyang tumawid kaya hindi na ako makapreno kasi napakalapit na… mabigat din sa loob ko dahil mahirap mawalan ng ama,” the truck driver said.
According to the police, the victim’s family have filed charges against the truck driver.
