Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes resigns as a member of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) a day after Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia tendered her resignation.
In a letter to Jose Alvarez, president of PDP-Laban, dated May 29, 2024, Cortes said the decision stems from his own desire to continue the unity he forged under Garcia and maintain Mandaue City under the banner of One Cebu.
Mandaue City is a highly urbanized city, but is still under the political jurisdiction of the Cebu Provincial Government.
One Cebu is the political party of the governor.
“As the Mayor of Mandaue City, my priority is to align with initiatives that promote and serve our community’s best interests,” Cortes said in the letter.
PDP-Laban is the political party of former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
