The Municipality of Guiuan in the Province of Eastern Samar has sizzled for four consecutive days.
The sweltering heat on May 26, 2024, Sunday, at 55ºC was recorded again on May 28, 2024, Tuesday, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
On May 27, 2024, Monday, the temperature logged 54°C while 53°C was recorded on May 29, 2024, Wednesday.
The 55°C heat index broke the temperature recorded in Iba, Zambales on April 28, 2024 at 53ºC. It is the highest heat index in the country recorded in 2024, so far.
PAGASA said that heat indices at 52ºC and up are already considered at “extremely dangerous level,” which means heat stroke is imminent.
Further, PAGASA pointed out that heat index is the measure of the temperature that a person feels which is different from the actual air temperature. It is computed by factoring in the humidity and the air temperature.
Heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely in areas experiencing heat index on "danger level," which is from 42°C to 51ºC, PAGASA added.
