The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued a yellow alert for the Luzon grid due to insufficient power supply on May 30, 2024.

The grid is under a yellow alert status from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The peak demand reached 12,478 megawatts while the available capacity stands at 13,591 megawatts.

NGCP said two plants have been on forced outage since 2023, three between January and March 2024, and 11 between April and May 2024.

Eight plants are operating at a lower capacity rate, leading to 3,154.3 megawatts unavailable to the grid.

The alert is also caused by a higher generation capacity because of an additional forecasted solar power, around 200 megawatts, and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) imports from Visayas.

The Visayas and Mindanao grids are in normal condition.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin falls below the necessary level to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
