Up to 100 families at a barangay in Dagupan City are affected by flooding caused by high tide.

According to the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (BDRRMO), the families live in Sitio Macario, Barangay Poblacion Oeste.

On May 30, 2024 water levels rose rapidly in the area, flooding the pathways used by residents.

"Baha na sila diyan, kailangan na nilang magsuot ng bota kasi ganyan na talaga ang tubig," Corazon Reyes, a resident, said.

The flooding occurs usually in the morning but subsides gradually by the afternoon, because the area is close to the Careenan Creek.

"Kapag ganitong buwan talagang nararanasan nila ‘yan, diretso ‘yan hanggang September," Mark Anthony Gutierrez, chairman of Barangay Poblacion Oeste, said.

Barangay officials said they are coordinating with the city and national government for assistance in improving the Careenan Creek, as simple clean-up drives are insufficient.

"Kung clean up kasi very silted na ‘yan, tapos ang nakakatakot diyan dahil sobrang luma na baka mahati na sa gitna," Gutierrez said.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), only Barangay Poblacion Oeste is experiencing flooding due to high tide.

Other barangays typically affected by flooding remain unaffected as the Pantal-Sinocalan River levels are low, as of this writing.

"Hindi pa nag ti-take effect ang high tide kasi start palang ng onset ng tag-ulan," Ronald De Guzman, a Dagupan City DRRM Officer, said.

The high tide level in Dagupan City reached 0.8 meters on May 30.
