The Kanlaon Volcano Observatory confirmed that the incident at 6:50 p.m. on June 3, 2024 was a phreatic eruption.
The Kanlaon Volcano Observatory said it has monitored rising seismicity at the volcano in recent months.
According to Engr. Mari Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory, the friction between hot materials released by the volcano has caused incandescence at the crater.
“Ang ating volcano, hot materials itong kanyang inilalabas. Ang hot materials na ito kumbaga, nagkakalapit sila sa isa’t isa. Dina-drive sila paitaas, itong malakas na energy. So ang friction between these hot materials could cause ng incandescence sa ating volcano,” Quintia said.
“The hot materials superheated the water deposit in the crater that led to the eruption," she told GMA Regional TV News.
With Alert Level 2 hoisted over Mount Kanlaon, barangays in the vicinity of the volcano, especially in areas within the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, have been advised to evacuate preemptively as the need arises.
Residents in Bago City, La Castellana, and La Carlota City in Negros Occidental have been advised to keep watch.
