Over 600 modified mufflers, known locally as bora-bora, as well as 42 blinkers, were destroyed in Davao City.
The destruction was part of the police’s campaign against modified mufflers and to ensure that these will not be used again.
“The destruction of modified mufflers and others symbolizes our aggressive commitment to the enforcement of traffic laws to ensure safe road environment for all Dabawenyos,” Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Chief, Colonel Rolindo Suguilon, said.
The mufflers and blinkers were seized by authorities from July 2, 2023 to May 30, 2024.
Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte said modified mufflers only contribute to noise pollution and can cause accidents.
“Pinaagi sa ing-ani nga pagdakop nato sa mga modified mufflers nga nagadugang sa noise pollution, we are improving the lives of the Dabawenyos, gina-improve nato ang quality of life kay labi na sa panahon karon nga congested na ang Davao, daghan na’g tao, guot nag ani unya naa pa mo’y mga driver nga abusado kaayo nga magsinamok lang sa dalan,” Duterte said through the City Information Office.
Meanwhile, the local government has also provided breath analyzer to the Traffic enforcement Unit of DCPO to bolster the enforcement of the anti-drunk driving law.
Based on data, 123 cases for violation of the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act have been filed since 2016 until 2020. Of 123 cases, 90 violators were put behind bars.
