June 17, 2024, Monday, has been declared by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. as a regular holiday to allow the solemn observance of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Through Proclamation No. 579, PBBM announced the delegation of June 17 as a national holiday in order to give way for the commemoration of "one of the two greatest feasts of Islam."

Eid al-Adha is the second of the two major holidays in the Islamic tradition (the other being Eid al-Fitr) that remembers the obedience of Prophet Abraham after he was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ismail.

Slaughtering animals, particularly sheep, goats, cows, and camels, is commonly observed by Muslims all over the world during Eid'l Adha as a symbolic representation of sacrifice. The act of killing, however, follows a number of considerations, such as the prohibition of sacrificing sick, disabled, and wounded animals.
