Farmers in Barangay Soro-Soro Ilaya, Batangas City, are planting corn seeds intensively, taking advantage of the moist soil after the rain.
Mang Felimon, a local farmer, said he calculates the harvest time and the quality of the corn yield carefully, which is optimal when the soil receives moderate rain.
Felimon's over one-hectare cornfield is part of his farmland in different areas of the city. He said just a moderate amount of rain within 10 days is needed for the corn to yield well, with the harvest expected by September.
However, heavy rains or typhoons could damage the corn or cause it to rot, making it unusable.
"Manalangin tayo na umulan, huwag babagyo, ulan lang," Alvarez said.
Nemia Lamac, another corn farmer, hopes the good weather will help ensure a fruitful harvest.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), scattered rains are expected in the CALABARZON region in the coming days.
"Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.
