A dog was placed allegedly in a sack, and choked to death, according to a witness who saw reportedly how a dog was killed at the Iloilo City Pound.

The witness reported the incident to the chairman of the Committee on Animal Welfare at the Iloilo City Council.

The witness said that the killing transpired at past 8 a.m. on May 31, 2024.

“Isinilid daw sa sako then ginamitan ng loop para maisilid dito. Tapos, narinig daw niya ang ungol ng aso for not more than one minute,” Ely Estante, chairman of the Committee on Animal Welfare of the Iloilo City Council, said.

Councilor Estante submitted immediately an incident report to the Office of the City Veterinarian.

In an investigation, it was learned that the dog referred to by the witness was found dead inside a cage and was later buried.

The dog was suffering reportedly from an ailment when it was rescued.

“May dinaramdam na ang aso. Unfortunately, natagpuan siyang patay na sa morning na iyon. Isinilid siya sa sako, usual. Hindi naman kasi pwedeng ilagay lang kung saan-saan,” Dr. Fernando Abulencia, head of Iloilo City Office of the City Veterinarian, said.

Dr. Abulencia added that the growl [or grunt] heard by the witness could have possibly been because of the injecting of multivitamins to the dog.

He made it clear that inhumane acts done to dogs have no place at the city pound.

If killing becomes necessary, he said, it is done through euthanasia or mercy killing, and that he is the only person authorized to carry out the procedure.
