Tephra fall was recorded at areas in Mount Kanlaon on June 12, 2024.
Tephra, fragmental material produced by a volcanic eruption, is said to be dangerous when stomped on, as it is hard and rough.
The presence of fragmented materials indicate reportedly of the strength of the eruption.
Despite the tephra fall, less seismic activity was recorded at Kanlaon Volcano, with only one volcanic earthquake logged since midnight of June 12, 2024, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on June 13, 2024.
However, Alert Level 2 remains raised over Kanlaon as steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may still occur, PHIVOLCS said.
Ten days after Mount Kanlaon erupted on June 3, 2024, evacuees in the Municipality of La Castellana have continued to rise in number.
According to data provided by the Local Government Unit (LGU), about 5,000 residents have sought temporary shelter at evacuation centers in the said town.
Aside from residents who live within the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, a forced evacuation was also implemented in communities near rivers and tributaries where muddy stream flows were recorded.
The LGU is worried that should the alert be raised to a level higher, a mass evacuation is likely.
Meanwhile, sulfur dioxide emitted by Mount Kanlaon is recorded at about 2,000 tons daily.
