At least 11 people died when a passenger bus collided with a pickup truck on the national highway in Sitio Ayaga, Barangay Lucban, Abulug, Cagayan, in the early hours of July 11, 2024.

According to PMaj. Antonio Palattao, Chief of Abulug police, the 14 family members in the pickup were returning from a wake in Apayao when the accident occurred shortly after midnight.

"Itong pickup, biglang pumasok dito sa main highway at tamang-tama naman na nandyan na ‘yung bus kaya nasalpok niya… Sa tingin natin parehas may pagkakamali," Palatto said.

The bus was heading to Sta. Ana, Cagayan. The impact dragged the pickup truck almost 20 meters before it hit a market stall by the road.

According to police reports, 11 people from the pickup, who came from Allacapan and Gattaran, Cagayan, died in the crash. 

The victims included an 11-month-old baby and a one-year-old child.

The pickup's driver and two children sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital. 

The bus driver, conductor, and several passengers were also injured.

"Kahapon kabonding ko lang yung anak ko, tapos kanina nandito na siya, hindi ko tanggap. hindi ko pa nakita talaga, ayaw ko… hindi ko makita yung anak ko na makita na ganun-ganun lang nangyari sa kanya," Ronalyn said.

Ronalyn and other relatives are appealing for assistance from the bus company for funeral expenses.

"Tulungan lang niya kami lalong lalo na sa mga [ka]baong nila… hanggang malibing sila," Ronalyn said.

Police said they are filing against the bus driver.

"Pini-prepare natin mga dokumento for the inquest proceedings and filing of case laban dito sa driver ng bus," Palatto said.
