A barangay resolution that allowed a company to conduct quarry activities in Cagayan de Oro has been repealed following complaints from residents.
The barangay council of Bugo passed a resolution rescinding a previous resolution that allowed the company to conduct quarry activities in the area.
“We already passed a resolution to stop transaction…. kay mao man gyud ang nakadaot kay ang ilang mga waste didto gipanglabay sa suba," Bugo Barangay Chairman, Spencer Cailing, said.
Personnel of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources (CLENRO), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), barangay officials, and an environmental group hatched a surprise inspection at the alleged illegal quarry activities in the area on Friday, July 12, 2024.
When the team arrived, it saw a mountain being denuded because of the quarry activities.
According to the Bugo Environmental Advocate Group, the quarry activities have worried residents, especially this rainy season.
The quarry activities were blamed for the flooding in the low-lying areas of the barangay.
“Dili gyud mahiluna ang among katawhan diha sa Bantiles particularly diha kay naka-experience man gyud ta last year July 21 ug kusog nga flashflood nga nakaguba gyud sa among property,” Bugo Environmental Advocate Group Vice President, Vince Morley Tianzon, said.
However, CLENRO said no environmental laws were violated in the quarry area.
“Although sa zoning nag-ingon nga agricultural pero not all area are agricultural kay pareho anang makita nato diha, kinsa ba uroy ang magdaro ana? Muna ang certification given to us by MGB sa applicant kay mangayo mana kung pwede ba na siya i-quarry ang ilang gibutang is outside sa no go zone so buot pasabot nakagawas siya sa pwede madaro,” CLENRO Chief, Engr. Armen Cuenca, said.
GMA Regional TV One Mindanao tried to get a comment from the quarry firm but to no avail.
