The local government of Marawi City has imposed a curfew in 24 barangays classified as most affected areas (MAA) of the siege in the city.
This is because cases of robbery, looting, and other illegal activities have become rampant in these barangays at night.
The Marawi City siege on May 23, 2017, left the city in ruins after the five-month armed conflict between government forces and pro-ISIS terrorists belonging to the Maute group.
The curfew took effect on July 17, 2024.
Based on the executive order signed by Mayor Majul Gandamra, the curfew will be in place from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. the following day.
“These criminals committing these illegal acts are taking advantage of the fact that most of the houses are empty while residents are awaiting compensation from the Marawi Compensation Board for them to rebuild their houses,” reads part of the order.
The order said the curfew shall apply only to individuals walking around the vicinity of MAA "suspiciously" and "unnecessarily."
It is not applicable to those travelling on board their vehicles from neighboring towns.
Government workers who are on duty during the curfew hours like medical doctors and veterinarians who need to work, and workers of public utility companies conducting construction, maintenance, or emergency activities are exempted.
The curfew is also not applicable to all private offices and employees whose time of work falls within the curfew hours, including their travel to and from their houses.
Offices, establishments, places of worship, and other institutions are urged to adjust their operating hours.
Individuals attending a wake of a family member are allowed during the curfew hours.
Business fishing activities will be subjected to lawful inspection by authorities.
Those who will violate will be penalized.
