The price of tomatoes at the New Bagsakan Market in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, has dropped to P40 to P50 per kilo from its previous P120 due to oversupply from Nueva Vizcaya.
Amy Mariano, a tomato vendor at the market, received a delivery of 500 kilos of tomatoes, which she expects to sell within two days.
However, she is forced to bring the price lower if she wants to dispose of the delivery.
"Dati, kaunti ang suplay ng kamatis [pero] mataas [na] ngayon, madami na, [kaya] bumababa na," Mariano said.
According to Eduardo Glor, President of the Vegetable Vendors Association, the amount of harvest has driven prices down.
"Ang mga biyahero, nadagdagan galing [Nueva] Vizcaya kasi kapag kakaunti ang biyahe, sila na mismo ang bumababa. Biglang baba ang presyo sa dami ng harvest," Glor said.
In addition to tomatoes, the supply of okra has also surged, causing its price to drop to P10 per kilo from P50-P60.
The prices of highland vegetables from Benguet have also gone down due to plentiful supply.
The low prices of vegetables are expected to continue through the "Ber" months.
"Hindi naman talaga ito ‘yung buyer time, talagang steady ang presyo; by “ber” [months] pa talaga [dapat], September o October," Glor said.
