A 24-year-old man died after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a power post and fell into an irrigation canal in Barangay Poblacion, Mangaldan, Pangasinan.

The victim was identified as John Paul Camara Diaz.

A video captured the aftermath of the accident, Diaz lying motionless in an irrigation canal. His face was bloodied, and rescuers worked together to retrieve him from the canal and rush him to the hospital.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Authorities said Diaz's motorcycle hit a power post before falling into the canal.

"Ayon sa imbestigador natin, umagaw siya ng linya. Sa kabilang linya siya bumangga. Kumbaga ‘yung poste nasa kabilang linya," PCPT Rommel Dulay, Public Information Officer of Mangaldan Police Station, said.

"Malamang nakatulog siya o nakaidlip. Although may helmet siya, pero sa lakas ng impact, hindi siya pinalad na makaligtas," Dulay added.

Diaz, a resident of Barangay Palua, had just visited his parents in Barangay Buenlag and was on his way home when the accident occurred.

"Nagkainuman na kaunti dito sa bahay, tapos sabi niya uuwi na siya, nagpaalam pa sa amin. Tapos natulog na kami, akala namin nakauwi na. Tumawag sa amin, nadisgrasya na [pala]," Ed Dabu, the victim's uncle, said.

The sudden loss left Diaz's family devastated.

"Malungkot, nabigla kaming lahat. Talagang sad kami," Dabu added.

Authorities urged motorists to be careful while driving to avoid such accidents.
