The Talisay City Police in Negros Occidental are tracking the whereabouts of a man who was caught in a video firing a gun.
The video showed that a woman was right in front of the man, also taking a video of the incident.
The woman was not hit, though.
The incident happened in Barangay Dos Hermanas, Talisay City on January 31, 2025 where a land dispute has fueled tension between several residents and the security guards of a businessman renting reportedly the parcels of land owned by complaining residents.
The man in the viral video was identied as Jose Alonsaga, reportedly a resident of Talisay City. However, the security agency that deploys guards at the area denied Alonsaga’s connection with them.
To recall, a commotion had already ensued at the area on January 22, 2025 when residents who have legal claims to the land seeks the return of their property.
The residents were able to show copies of their Certificate of Land Ownership Awards (CLOAs) to prove they are legitimate owners of over 40 hectares of land.
The said property was rented by a certain “Paul Chang” in 2002.
According to the police, Alonsaga could face charges for grave threat, illegal discharge of firearm, and violation of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban.
GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas has tried to seek a comment from “Paul Chang,” but he is yet to issue a statement.
“Ang possible na ikaso natin sa kanya - grave threat, illegal discharge of firearm, violation of RA 10591, and syempre violation of COMELEC Resolution No. 11067,” said Major Rhazl Jim Jocson, deputy chief of the Talisay City Police Station.
Meanwhile, in an official statement issued by Talisay City Mayor Neil Lizares, the Local Government Unit has focused tightly on the issue in coordination with the police.
Lizares said he is set to summon the farmers and the person claiming ownership to the property.
“The recent incident in San Antonio Dos is alarming and unacceptable. I have always been clear on my stand that I do not and will not tolerate any kind of violence against any Talisaynon. Instead, I always promote resolving legal issues in a legal and peaceful manner,” Lizares stated.
The news team went to the Office of the Department of Agrarian Reform in Negros Occidental. The Provincial Agrarian Reform Officer refused an on-cam interview, but vowed to look into the incident.
