At least five suspected cases of chikungunya were recorded in Davao City in January 2025.

The residents who were suspected of having contracted chikungunya are members of the same family in Barangay 9-A but they have already recovered.

The clinical diagnosis will still undergo a confirmatory test.

“Awareness sa atoang mga katawhan nga dapat manglimpyo, search and destroy activity. Fogging among gihatag nga intervention didto tungod kay nagataas ang suspected nga kaso sa chikungunya sa 9A,” Melodina Babante, head of the Tropical Disease Prevention and Control Unit of the Davao City Health Office (CHO), said.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease that causes fever, swelling, and joint pain.

Like dengue, patients may experience muscle pain, headache, vomiting, fatigue, and rashes.

“Chikungunya is same mosquito, ang vector niya is same, si aedes mosquito but chikungunya is dili siya makapatay, dili siya fatal. Pero ang mga clinical signs and symptoms is the same sa dengue,” Babante said.

Residents in the barangay have been informed about what needed to be done to control the disease.

“Nag-conduct mi og cleanup kay before mag fogging or misting, maglimpyo gyud ang area kay kung dili limpyo, dili pud na mag-misting ug fogging kay samot mag kuan ang mga lamok,” Barangay Chairwoman Suzette Rodriguez said.

Barangays in the city also pushed for the creation of a mosquito-borne disease task force that will focus on diseases caused by mosquitoes like dengue and chikungunya.
