The number of dengue cases in Region 1 jumped by 70 percent in the first 25 days of 2025 compared to the same period last year, with Pangasinan recording the most number of infections.

According to the Center for Health Development (CHD) Region 1, at least 470 cases were recorded from January 1 to 25, up from 269 cases in 2024.

The highest number was in Pangasinan (259 cases), including 34 in Dagupan City, followed by La Union (97), Ilocos Sur (71), and Ilocos Norte (43).

Two deaths have already been reported, so far, in Pangasinan and in La Union.

Despite the increase, CHD-Region 1 Spokesperson Dr. Rheuel Bobis said the situation cannot be considered an outbreak just yet.

“Historically, inaasahan pa siyang tataas during rainy season. Kung i-compare natin sa five-year historical data ng dengue, hindi naman siya matatawag na epidemic or masyadong mataas na kaso,” he said.

Health experts attribute the increase to rainfall in early January, which created breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Residents like Juvelyn Montajes in Dagupan City are taking extra precautions, like cleaning their surroundings daily to prevent mosquito infestation.

“Mahalaga talagang malinis ang bahay namin pati kapaligiran kasi mahirap na pamugaran ng lamok, mahirap magkasakit, magastos,” Montajes said.

CHD-Region 1 urge the public to follow these preventive measures to prevent dengue:

  • Keep water containers covered and clean.
  • Maintain cleanliness at home.
  • Dispose of old tires and containers that collect water.
  • Wear protective clothing like long sleeves and pants.
  • Use mosquito nets while sleeping.
  • Apply mosquito repellent on exposed skin.
