At least a thousand unconsolidated public utility jeepneys (PUJs) in Bacolod City will join a transport strike on Monday, February 17, 2025.
The transport strike is a protest action against the scheduled apprehension of drivers and operators of unconsolidated PUJs tagged locally as “kolorum” by February 17, 2025.
The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bacolod City and Land Transportation Office (LTO) 6 will implement stringently the apprehension.
The Bacolod City LGU said that the risks posed by unconsolidated PUJs to passengers is high.
According to leaders of Grupong Bacolod Alliance of Commuters, Operators and Drivers (BACOD), and United Negros Drivers and Operators Center (UNDOC), they will join the scheduled “tigil pasada” (stalling of trips).
The groups added that the strike could span to not less than five days.
Meanwhile, the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed worry over the possible effects of the transport strike.
The group appealed to the transport sector and the regulatory body to sit down and discuss the issue.
However, the president of Bacolod Modernized Jeepney Association, Romeo Justiniani, said that the strict implementation of apprehending “kolorum” PUJs is long overdue.
Based on data from the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO), 83 percent of PUJs in Bacolod City has gone through the required consolidation, which means unconsolidated traditional PUJs are at 17 percent only, as of this writing.
