Two leaders of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a firefight in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.

The two were identified as alias “Joven” and alias “Gaga,” commanding officer and vice commanding officer of the NPA’s Regional Sentro de Gravidad, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NERMC), respectively.

According to the 401st Infantry Brigade, troops of the 3rd Special Forces Battalion engaged the rebels in an armed encounter, which lasted for about 10 minutes.

The military launched the operation after receiving reports that the communist rebels were allegedly extorting goods and money from residents.

Seized during the operation were a hand grenade, blasting caps, an improvised explosive device, medical supplies, subversive documents, gadgets, and other belongings.

The bodies of the two men were turned over to the local government.

"We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community. This successful operation is a testament to the support of the local residents who stand alongside with us in our shared quest for a peaceful and progressive life for all of us,” 401st Commander, Col. Emil Cruz, said.

"We encourage those who continue to resist to surrender and return to the folds of the law, as we aim for peace and prosperity for all of us here in Agusan del Sur. What occurred to NPA casualties deeply saddened us, they commit on violence, continuing on their act to victimize civilians despite our repeated offers of peace,” he added.
