Consumers in Dagupan City continue to take advantage of cheaper onions, with the price red onions dropping to P140 from P200 per kilo and white onions to P85 from P140 per kilo, at Malimgas Public Market.

Vendors said continuous harvest in Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija has increased supply, which led to the price drop.

Some traders are holding off on bulk purchases at Urdaneta City's Bagsakan Market. They said they fear further price drops.

“Hindi na muna ngayon kasi baka mabagsakan kami ng presyo ng sibuyas,” Alice Custodio, a trader, said.

Shoppers are encouraged to buy onions now while prices are lower, especially since the quality of newly harvested onions remains high.

“Malaking bagay para sa ekonomiya at makatipid kami,” Angela Laroco, a buyer, said.

MORE PRICE DROPS EXPECTED

The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) expects onion prices to decrease further in the coming weeks.

“Siguro ibaba ‘yan ng P110 to P120 ‘yung MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) ng pulang sibuyas at ‘yung puti ay nasa P90 to P100. Kasi ang farmgate ay nasa P45 pesos na lang ang puti, ‘yung pula ay nasa P65 to P70,” SINAG Chairman Engr. Rosendo So said.
