At least seven local government units suspended classes following the magnitude 5.0 earthquake that hit Davao del Sur morning on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
According to a report by GMA Super Radyo Davao, these LGUs include Digos City and the towns of Matanao, Hagonoy, Padada, Magsaysay, Bansalan, and Kiblawan.
At least 10 students in the province were given medical attention after they felt dizzy and fainted after the earthquake.
Those who fainted reportedly lost consciousness from panic.
In Davao City, students were evacuated from school buildings when the quake struck.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)-Matanao is assessing the possible effects of the earthquake.
Meanwhile, some parts of Hagonoy, Padada, Kiblawan, Sulop, Malalag and Sta. Maria in Davao Occidental also experienced power interruption after the quake.
“As to the major damages ongoing pa pud ang pag-assess niini sa atoang City Engineer’s Office. Naa’y mga cracks but again, we have to confirm on this, but as per checking man gud namo ganiha, naa gyud movement sa kagamitan sa opisina but to the extent of damage, light ra gyud siya,” Office of the Civil Defense-Davao (OCD-11) Information Officer, Ezra Fernandez, said.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the epicenter of the tremor was traced to Matanao town, but the quake was also felt in other areas in Mindanao. “Kung aduna gyud kusog nga pagtay-og, dili maratol ug modagan sa exit. Isa man gud na sa mga mamahimong cause og panic mga estudyante, mag-panic, mag-stampede sa exit kay wala kabalo unsay buhaton. Again, mag-conduct ta og duck, cover and hold,” Fernandez added.
