Government troops recovered war materiel following a clash between the Philippine Army’s (PA) 2nd Infantry Division (ID) and alleged New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Panaytayan, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.
According to 2ID, the 203rd Infantry Brigade, 4th Infantry Battalion soldiers were conducting focused military operations in Sitio Lumboy when they encountered alleged NPA members.
This led to a 25-minute firefight before the insurgents fled.
No casualties were reported on the government side, while authorities are still verifying losses on the alleged NPA's side.
Troops discovered 14 bunkers, an early warning device, and an alleged NPA lecture area in the area.
They also recovered a bandolier, an M16 magazine, 123 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, and personal belongings left behind by the fleeing rebels.
Major General Cerilo Balaoro Jr., commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, said the seizure of war materiel will weaken the NPA's capability to conduct attacks.
“We are further intensifying our operations to dismantle their remaining strongholds and prevent them from sowing fear and violence in our communities,” Balaoro said.
Authorities continue to urge remaining NPA members to surrender, abandon their armed struggle, and take advantage of the government's Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) to reintegrate into society.
