The dredging operation at the Pantal River in Dagupan City, Pangasinan has been put on hold for nearly six weeks because the budget for the project has yet to be released, as of this writing.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirmed funding has already been approved, but the agency is still waiting for its release before resuming operations.
“Pina-process na ‘yung mga kailangan, mayroon namang pondo,” Engr. Kim Angelo Soy, DPWH Project Engineer, said.
While waiting, DPWH is focusing on clearing the spoil site, where dredged soil and sand are stored.
The materials collected are being transported to areas in need of backfill, including low-lying communities and a local dumpsite upon the request of the local government.
“Napapanahon talaga kaya priority ang mga low-lying areas tapos nag-request din ang LGU na itambak ang spoil sa may dumpsite,” Soy said.
Residents in flood-prone areas are already benefiting from the backfill efforts.
“Kapag umuulan, kawawa kami dito. Malaking tulong ‘yang panambak,” Josephine Cayabyab, a resident, said.
Once the budget is released, DPWH said they will immediately resume dredging operations to improve water flow and reduce flooding risks in the area.
