Pet owners in Calasiao, Pangasinan are taking extra steps to keep their animals cool and safe from heat stroke.

In Barangay Nalsian Centro, MJ Fernandez, a pet owner, sprays water constantly on his three-year-old golden retriever to relieve the heat.

He also puts ice in the dog’s drinking water and keeps an electric fan running near the cage.

“Hinihingal sila masyado kapag ganitong init kaya mas maganda na nasa cage lang sila and may electric fan na naka-standby sa kanila,” Fernandez said.

Veterinarians warn that animals are also vulnerable to heat stroke, especially when the heat index reaches 40°C or higher.

“At the same time, dapat may sigurado silang masisilungan para siguradong maiwasan natin ang mortality kasi napakataas ng heat index ngayon,” Dr. Jorge Bandong, Calasiao Municipal Veterinarian, said.

According to the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), signs of heat stroke in pets include:

  • excessive panting,
  • excessive drooling or salivating,
  • agitation or restlessness,
  • very red or very pale gums,
  • bright red tongue,
  • increased heart rate,
  • signs of mental confusion,
  • dizziness or staggering,
  • muscle tremors,
  • breathing distress,
  • seizures,
  • vomiting; and
  • nosebleed.

Experts advise pet owners to keep animals in shaded areas and seek veterinary help immediately if symptoms appear.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) recorded a 45 degrees Celcius heat index in Dagupan City, the highest this year so far.

Continued hot weather expected in the coming days.

“Asahan natin sa mga susunod na araw, nandiyan pa rin ‘yung maalinsangan na panahon o maalinsangan na araw,” Engr. Jose Estrada Jr., Chief Meteorological Officer of PAGASA Dagupan Station, said.
