The Police Regional Office-Davao (PRO-11) has vowed to secure mass demonstrations that are being staged by supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte following his arrest.
PRO-11 said it respects the freedom of expression and the right of the people to assemble peacefully.
“Nagpro-provide po kami ng area security sa mga rally na ginaganap sa whole davao region,” PRO-11 Spokesperson, Major Catherine Dela Rey, said.
After Duterte was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, supporters across the country have continued to conduct prayer and peace rallies, motorcade, noise barrage, and other activities in support to the former President.
According to a political analyst, Ramon Beleno III, people power movement may arise should the emotion of Duterte’s supporters escalate.
Beleno, however, asked the public to not let emotions take over because if tension shoots up, the President may use this as reason to declare martial law.
“Kung makakakita ba tayo ng people power in the future tingnan muna natin kung masu-sustain ba ng ganitong feeling o ganitong movement. Medyo chill muna tayo i know maiinit ang mga ulo ng mga tao let’s not give the president an opportunity to declare martial law pag nangyari yon game over na,” Beleno said.
Meanwhile, the Task Force Davao clarified that the military tank spotted at Ecoland in Davao City was part of the security measures being put in place as the city celebrates the Araw ng Dabaw.
