The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has banned trucks weighing 15 tons and above from Buntun Bridge in Cagayan due to worsening structural conditions, including visible cracks and holes in the deck slab.

DPWH issued an advisory to the local governments of Solana and Tuguegarao City to strictly enforce the restriction, which follows the collapse of Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela on February 27, 2025.

The lifespan of Buntun Bridge, which has served motorists for 56 years, will depend on collaborative efforts from all sectors, according to DPWH.

The bridge is the only connection between Tuguegarao City, Solana, and nearby towns.

To ease congestion, DPWH has begun constructing an alternative bridge and a craneway to accommodate light vehicles while repairs on the main bridge are underway.

Some motorists expressed frustration over the situation.

“Ang masasabi ko lang jan eh failure of plan. Eh kung ginaya na lang nila 'yung Buntun Bridge natin, sa tagal-tagal na ginamit yan... hanggang ngayon buhay pa, hindi sana nasayang yung pera ng taong bayan,” Dominador Bunagan, a motorist, said.

Meanwhile, other drivers are adjusting to the changes.

“Iwas-iwas lang kami sa bawal na daanan na tulay,” Daniel Villegas, another motorist, said.

Authorities urge motorists to comply with weight restrictions to prevent further damage and ensure safety.
