The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) has recommended that a public school in Barangay Buhisan be vacated at once due to large cracks.

Even inside the principal’s office at Buhisan Elementary School, large cracks on the wall and the floor are visible.

Gemma Amarillo admitted that the large cracks have started to raise worry on the safety of students, teachers, and also to several parents who hang out in the vicinity of the school while waiting to fetch their children.

She said she has also raised the concern over the reported hollow foundation of the school.

The recommendation of the CCDRRMO, chaired by Ramil Ayuman, is based on the findings of an inspection done by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) that the place is not fit anymore for the structure and should be vacated.

The cracks at the principal’s office are connected to the cracks found in classrooms which also worried parents on the safety of their children.

The MGB findings are being supported by the Office of the Building Official (OBO) which said that the situation of the school is dangerous to further presence of schoolchildren, their teachers, and their parents or guardians.

The CCDRRMO has confirmed the presence of large cracks based on its separate assessment.

The Cebu City Government, with Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia at the helm, is set to cancel face-to-face classes and shift to modular distance learning, while identifying a relocation site for the school building.

Garcia is set to meet with stakeholders to smoothen the action plan so as not to affect the class schedules of schoolchildren.

Buhisan Elementary School has over 700 students in the elementary level, and about 300 high school learners.

The school is in an upland area with a vantage view of houses below.

To recall, the recent earthquake that hit Cebu City was in January 2025 seen to have affected the integrity of the schoold building.
