A pregnant shark with wounds on its gills was washed ashore in Barangay Caasinan, Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte and died shortly after.

Residents captured the shark and one them reportedly hit it with a piece of wood.

A resident, Jessie Ortega, said residents thought initially it was a blue marlin that they saw. It was not until they pulled it to the beach that they realized it was a shark.

It was the first time he saw a shark in person.

“Ang iyang ikog, ang palikpik, abi namo’g blue marlin bitaw, bariles, kay mura man gud siya og bariles. Pagbira sa mga kauban nako, hijo man diay,” a resident, Jessie Ortega, said.

“Hadlok kaayo kay first time pa gyud ko nakakita og hijo since birth,” he added.

The shark measured nine feet long and weighed around 100 kilos. It appeared to have hack wounds on its gills, prompting residents to report it to authorities.

The shark died later due to its injuries, and was buried.

Barangay officials and personnel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) also released the shark’s 30 pups into the sea.

Authorities reminded the public to report sightings of sharks and other marine animals and not to harm them.
