Around 1,000 campaign posters nailed on trees were removed in SOCCSKSARGEN through “Operation Baklas.”

Personnel of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat collected more than 300 campaign materials nailed or tied on trees.

The operation was conducted by DENR, Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), police, and local government units of Tacurong, Isulan, Esperanza, Bagumbayan, Lambayong, and Pres. Quirino.

Meanwhile, nearly 700 election paraphernalia were also taken down from trees and utility poles in Cotabato.

DENR-12 said these harmful practices cause wounds on trees, making them vulnerable to pests, diseases, and structural damage.

“The Department also urged political candidates and the public to adhere to environmental laws and emphasized that trees play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance, mitigating climate change, and sustaining biodiversity,” DENR-12 said.

“The activity was in line with the implementation of Republic Act No. 3571 and Presidential Decree No. 953, which strictly prohibit the cutting, destroying, or injuring of trees, plants, and vegetation along public thoroughfares, plazas, parks, and other public areas,” DENR-12 added.
