As both national and local candidates intensify their campaigns for May 2025 midterm elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Ilocos Region has activated a local committee that will monitor and respond to vote-buying reports in Dagupan City and nearby areas.
City Election Officer, Atty. Michael Franks Sarmiento, said several government and civic groups are working together to guard the election process.
“Dito sa Dagupan City, activated na ang Local Committee on Kontra Bigay. Kasama natin dito ang PNP, DepEd, COA, DSWD, NBI, AFP, IBP and accredited citizens like Lente, Namfrel at PPCRV,” Sarmiento said.
The public can report incidents of vote-buying to the committee directly.
COMELEC also organized a support team to help prepare official complaints against those accused of being involved in vote-buying.
“Ang target natin ay maka-receive tayo ng formal complaint talaga,” Sarmiento said.
Concerned voters like Josephine Magalong support the move and say it is necessary to keep the election honest.
“Syempre, iligal kasi ‘yun. Dapat, ang boto, hindi ibinebenta,” Magalong said.
As of April 7, no formal complaint has been filed in Dagupan City, but COMELEC officials remain alert.
Authorities remind the public that buying or selling votes is illegal and can lead to penalties.
Voters are urged to stay vigilant and protect the integrity of the elections.
