A female saltwater crocodile named ‘Kanluran’ has been turned over to the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) in Malagos, Davao City.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), the 137-inch-long crocodile weighing 300 kilograms was under the temporary custody of the Philippine Army after it was rescued in 2017.

‘Kanluran’ was rescued after it got caught accidentally in a fishing net in Liguasan Marsh, Cuyapon, Kabacan, Cotabato. It sustained a minor leg injury and had since been closely monitored by authorities.

The crocodile was transferred safely to the PEF center for continued care and rehabilitation.

“The turnover highlighted the strong collaboration between DENR, the Philippine Army, and the Philippine Eagle Foundation in advancing wildlife conservation efforts in the region. Moreover, to institute more specialized care of PEF professionals, Kanluran will undergo continued rehabilitation in a secure, species-appropriate environment,” DENR-12 said.

“This transition not only ensures the well-being of the crocodile but also reinforces the shared commitment to promoting awareness and protection of the country’s critical wildlife species,” DENR-12 added.
