The sweltering weather may get even hotter in the coming weeks, including in Dagupan City, with state weather bureau PAGASA warning that temperatures could peak during Holy Week and the second half of April.
Jun Soriano of PAGASA-Dagupan said stronger easterlies are expected to drive the heat index even higher, with values possibly exceeding 50°C.
“Hindi natin maalis kung tataas o bababa kasi kakasimula pa lang ng tag-init,” Soriano said.
In recent days, the heat index in Dagupan has hovered between 44°C to 46°C—classified as “dangerous” and posing serious health risks.
The heat index is a measure of what the temperature feels like to the human body when humidity is factored in.
Some residents have already begun to feel the toll of the extreme heat.
Janjie Generao, a student, was seen seeking shade under a tree after class just to avoid the direct sun.
“Medyo nahihilo lang po ako kaya sobrang inom po ng tubig,” she said.
Emilyn Ocado, a 48-year-old from nearby Labrador town, said she and her family have minimized going outdoors.
“Kung wala lang kaming importanteng lakad hindi kami lalabas, magkukulong nalang kami sa bahay tapos may bentilador, sobra kasing init,” Ocado said.
Local health authorities are reminding the public to take preventive measures, especially with the upcoming Holy Week when many people are expected to go out for religious and recreational activities.
Dr. Rheuel Bobis, spokesperson of the Center for Health Development in Region 1, said people should be mindful of proper hygiene after sun exposure to prevent bacterial and fungal infections.
“Ang skin diseases ay cause ng several bacterial or fungal infection na dala ng poor sanitation after ma-exposed sa init ng araw,” Bobis said.
With hotter days ahead, authorities urge the public the stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and remain vigilant against heat-related illnesses.
