A security guard of a hotel in Cebu City's uptown area went berserk and broke the glass door of the building he was guarding.
Responding policemen shot him when he started attacking them.
In a video posted by a netizen, policemen were seen chasing a man toward Osmeña Boulevard in Cebu City.
The man was asked to surrender to the authorities, but he ran away instead.
Police caught up with him at an intersection of Osmeña Boulevard.
Members of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team asked again the knife-wielding suspect to surrender, but he attempted to stab a policeman with the weapon.
A member of the SWAT team shot the suspect in the leg to incapacitate him.
The video showed that a number of kibitzers was sent away by the authorities because of the high risk that the situation poses.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he is placed under hospital arrest, as of posting time.
It was learned that his colleagues sought police assistance after he ran amok and broke the glass door of the building. He was also reported to have dragged a front desk staff member who asked help from the guard of an adjacent establishment.
As a police outpost is situated near the establishment, the authorities were quick to respond to the alarm that incapacitated the suspect. However, a policeman was injured in the incident when a bullet ricocheted and hit him. The said policeman is already out of danger.
Earlier, the alarm was reported as a robbery incident. Later, it was verified that the suspect went berserk at his workplace for an undetermined reason.
The security guard is described as a taciturn, or one who is habitually silent and uncommunicative, on his first month on the job.
Meanwhile, Cebu City Police Office Director, Police Colonel Enrico Figueroa lauded policemen for their prompt response to the alarm, for having observed maximum tolerance that averted untoward incidents.
The policemen are set to be honored formally, Figueroa said.
Further, Figueroa underscored the significance of police outposts for swift responses to crimes.
Figueroa also reminded policemen to take extra precautions when dealing with similar situations and preventing crowds during an ongoing response.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak visited the establishment but the manager refused to grant an interview.
