The Philippine Coast Guard Southeastern Mindanao assured it will inspect vessels in its area of responsibility to ensure they are safe to accommodate the expected influx of travelers for the Holy Week.
“Aside sa atong pre-departure inspection, aduna pud tay gina-conduct nga vessel safety enforcement inspection to ensure seaworthiness and safety of the passengers traveling at sea,” said Ensign Winston Gonzales, spokesperson of Coast Guard Southeastern Mindanao.
The Coast Guard also cautioned the public against traveling on vessels that are not authorized to transport passengers.
In March 2025, a motorbanca carrying at least 19 people capsized off Davao City. That motorbanca was not an authorized passenger vessel. Fortunately, the 19 people were rescued.
Meanwhile, as many people are also expected to stay at resorts during the Holy Week, the Coast Guard reminded resorts to make sure there are lifeguards on standby in areas designated for swimming.
The agency also reminded visitors to swim with companions.
“Also practice buddy-buddy system. Do not swim alone kay anything is possible… pag naa naka sa tubig, you are vulnerable of having cramps kay kung mag-cramps ka, it is hard to save yourself without someone helping you,” Gonzales said.
