Campaign posters placed near an intersection in Oton town, Province of Iloilo caused reportedly a vehicular accident.

The campaign posters obstructed allegedly the view of drivers on other vehicles.

The vehicular accident happened in Barangay Lambuyao, Oton on April 6, 2025.

The collision at a road intersection in Barangay Lambuyao wrecked the front section of the vehicles. The drivers sustained injuries but were later reported to be out of harm’s way.

One of the drivers said he did not notice a vehicle coming from the other side of the road.

According to the Oton Municipal Police, the intersection is deemed an accident-prone area with our without campaign posters.

However, police said, campaign posters are indeed a hindrance to the vista of motorists.

"Especially kung baguhan ka sa lugar at hindi mo alam na sa unahan may crossing, posible talaga kasi nakaharang sya sa kalsada sa kabila,” according to Captain Lunelyn Talamillo, deputy chief of Oton Municipal Police Station.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) - Oton said that since the campaign posters are mounted within a private property, these cannot be considered an election offense. But because of the risk the posters pose, COMELEC will ask candidates to have the materials transferred.

“May alegasyon na because of that na may inilagay malapit sa intersection, may nangyaring aksidente. So what we are going to do is hihilingin sila (kandidato) na kung maari, i-clear nila lahat na intersections sa area ng Oton,” G Bert Arbis, election officer of COMELEC-Oton said.

Police further said that aside from the transfer of campaign posters as a mitigating measure, it is still the responsibility of the motorist to drive safely, or ride safely, and to take extra caution when negotiating bends and intersections.

“Kung may makitang rumble strips, dapat ma-alarm na sila na sa unahan niyan, may mga crossing or accident prone,” Tamillo emphasized.
