Two local chief executives in Negros Island have expressed on their respective social media pages their deepest sympathy immediately after the announcement of the death of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21, 2025.
“With deep sorrow, the City of Bacolod joins the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” said Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez.
“His life was a testament to humility, compassion, and unwavering faith. As the first pope from the Global South, he brought the Church closer to the margins - amplifying the voices of the poor, the forgotten, and the suffering. His message of mercy and love resonated across cultures and creeds, reminding us all of the sacred value of human dignity,” Benitez added.
He cited a memorable quote from Pope Francis that reflects, he said, the essence of papacy.
“Pope Francis once said, “The world tells us to seek success, power and money; God tells us to seek humility, service and love.” These words reflect the very essence of his papacy - a shepherd who chose simplicity, walked with the people, and led with a heart open to all.
"On behalf of the people of Bacolod, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Holy See and to our fellow faithful. We offer our prayers for the eternal repose of Pope Francis’ soul, and we give thanks for his life of service, wisdom, and moral courage. May his memory inspire us to lead lives marked by justice, compassion, and peace,”" Benitez further said.
Meanwhile, Negros Oriental Governor Chaco Sagarbarria has enjoined the public in mourning the death of Pope Francis.
“It is with great despair to know that today, the Catholic community, and the world, lost another pope. On behalf of the entire people of Negros Oriental, I, Governor Chaco Sagarbarria, enjoins the entire society in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. Requiescat in pace, Santo Papa!” Sagarbarria’s message reads.
Meanwhile, the Municipality of Loon in the Province of Bohol also expressed, in a message, deep sorrow for the passing away of the Holy See.
“The Local Government Unit of Loon joins the world in this time of profound sorrow and prayer as we come together to grieve the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis who touched countless lives with his unwavering faith and compassion," LGU Loon wrote.
"The passing of our beloved Pope leaves a deep void in the hearts of millions around the world. His messages of love, peace, and hope will continue to inspire us to strive for unity and understanding among all people.
"Let us take a moment to reflect on his teachings and remember the ways he encouraged us to love beyond our divisions. May we find solace in our shared memories and carry forward his vision for a more compassionate world as we navigate through this painful loss together. Rest in eternal peace, Pope Francis,”" LGU Loon further said.
