A narrow bridge often blamed for road accidents in Mangaldan, Pangasinan is now being demolished to make way for a wider, safer one.

The old bridge connected the barangays of Lanas and Maasin and had long been a danger zone due to its tight width and curved approach.

Locals said many accidents occurred, especially at night due to poor lighting.

“Noong maliit pa [ako], maraming naaaksidente talaga diyan sa gabi kasi madilim diyan. Ito lang habang ginagawa, talagang may nadisgrasya na naman,” Rodrigo Garcia, barangay councilman of Lanas, said.

Construction of a new concrete bridge has started, funded by the national government. It will span six meters wide — matching the road’s size and adding an extra meter for proper drainage.

“Six meters ito, bale isusunod na rin siya sa sukat ng kalsada. Actually ‘yung kalsada plus 1 meter dahil sa drainage,” Garcia added.

The new bridge is expected to ease traffic and provide safer travel for motorists.

“Makakatulong sa amin [ito] kasi luluwag ang tulay,” Lemuel Quidilig, a resident, said.

While construction is ongoing, vehicles are rerouted to alternate roads.

Barangay officials are asking for patience from motorists whose travel time may be affected.

The bridge is expected to be completed in two months—just in time before the rainy season begins.
