Just weeks before the upcoming 2025 elections, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in the Ilocos Region is investigating reports of vote-buying and possible abuse of government resources involving two local candidates.
One complaint accuses an incumbent official of handing out money in exchange of votes.
Another involves the same candidate allegedly taking part in the distribution of Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) aid.
COMELEC has asked the complainants to submit formal affidavits and evidence.
“I-evaluate namin ang affidavit. From there, titignan natin kung ano ang magiging next step natin, so hihintayin pa natin ‘yung sworn statement at mga ebidensya nila,” Atty. Reddy Balarbar, Acting Regional Election Director of COMELEC-Region 1, said.
Meanwhile, preparations for election day are underway at the Mangaldan National High School in Pangasinan.
Classrooms will serve as polling precincts, with chairs and other materials soon to be arranged.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has conducted inspections to ensure voters' safety.
“Nag-ocular inspection na ang BFP sa mga classroom para matiyak natin ang safety ng mga boboto,” Principal Eduardo Castillo said.
COMELEC continues to coordinate with the Department of Education (DepEd) to address possible issues at the polling centers before the official voting period.
