A reticulated python was rescued after being spotted near chicken cages in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), the python measured 2.5 meters long and weighed 3.8 kilos.

A concerned resident turned the snake over to the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Lebak.

The snake was then released back into a forested area in Barangay Hinalaan after veterinarians from the Municipal Agriculture Office assessed its health and confirmed that the reptile was fit to be released to its natural habitat.

“Reticulated pythons are the world’s longest snake and one of the heaviest. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it thrives in tropical forests and is an excellent swimmer, even reaching small islands. Unlike venomous snakes, it is a non-venomous constrictor, meaning it kills prey by wrapping around it and squeezing,” DENR-12 said.

“It has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2011 as "Least Concern”. However, conservation efforts remain crucial to preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. Authorities continue to advocate for public awareness in protecting and conserving wildlife species like the reticulated python,” DENR-12 added.
