Shoppers at the Mangaldan Public Market in Pangasinan are enjoying lower egg prices this week, thanks to an oversupply — but most of the eggs are smaller than usual.

Vendors say they’re receiving more eggs than expected, even if deliveries don’t arrive daily. However, most of the eggs are in extra small to small sizes.

“Syempre sa klima, mainit kaya maraming supply ng itlog,” Analyn Alreza, a vendor, said.

According to the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), the extreme heat is stressing hens, leading to smaller eggs.

“Maliit ang mga itlog ngayon dahil sa hot weather natin at saka ‘yung manok kasi nahihirapan din,” Engr. Rosendo So, SINAG Chairman, said.

As of April 29, 2025, egg prices range from P4.50 to P9.00 per piece depending on size:

  • Extra small – small: P4.50 to P5.50 per piece
  • Medium: P6 to P7 per piece
  • Large: P8 per piece
  • Extra large: P9 per piece

Prices have dropped by 50 centavos per piece — or P15 per tray — over the past week.

For many buyers, this is a welcome relief.

“Kasi ‘yun lang din ang pasok sa budget namin kaya mabuting mababa ang presyo,” Fernan Elizarde, a customer, said.

SINAG said prices remain unpredictable, and it’s unclear whether the current low prices will continue.
