Heavy rain fell in the City of Iloilo evening on April 29, 2025. A video taken by a rider showed flooding in a few city streets.
According to the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), at least 10 barangays were flooded.
“Kagabi lang talaga naganap which is the highest na naitala, 147 mm [millimeter] sa Diversion Area ang kabuuang dami ng ulan sa loob ng ilang oras,” Darwin Papa, Disaster Response head at the Iloilo City DRRMO, said.
Meanwhile, the ceiling at the entrance of a hotel lobby in Mandurriao District was destroyed by strong winds and collapsed.
A delivery rider was injured, while three vehicles were damaged.
In an official statement, the hotel management assured of the structural integrity of the building despite the incident.
The hotel did not grant GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas an interview, though, when the news team went to the area.
State weather bureau PAGASA said that localized thunderstorms occurred evening on April 29, 2025. However, PAGASA pointed out that the downpour and strong winds were not effects of the Low Pressure Area (LPA) being monitored at about the time the incident happened. Neither were the strong winds signs of the onset of the rainy season.
“Kung umiinit ang ibabaw ng lupa, naiipon ang moisture sa kalangitan. Ang Mayo ay talagang ganoon sa climatology ng Iloilo. Itong mga buwan kung saan unti-unting dumadami ang mga thunderstorms,” Ferdinand Rubin, weather specialist at PAGASA Iloilo, said.
In Bacolod City, photographs showed of the rise in water level at a portion in BREDCO Port.
A few portions of Barangay Banago were also flooded.
Clogged canals were once more pinpointed as the cause of the flooding.
"Marami talaga siyang basura. Engineering works talaga ang kailangan natin. Kahit anong linis pa ang gagawin dahil wala namang labasan, maiipon pa rin ang basura,” said Dr. Anna Maria Laarni Pornan, head of the Bacolod City DRRMO.
A resident named "Elmer" said that the city needs more outlets for runoff water to pass through.
"Dapat lagyan nila ng outlets. Ibalanse nila yung tubig para dumiretso dyan,” Elmer said.
It was learned that the City Engineer’s Office is set to once again check the area.
