A brake failure caused a three-vehicle crash along the national highway in Barangay 5, Bantay, Ilocos Sur.
Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showed a sports utility vehicle (SUV) and a scooter slowing down at an intersection. Suddenly, an 18-wheeler truck crashed into both from behind.
The scooter was dragged several meters by the truck. Its driver suffered wounds and is now recovering at a hospital.
Police said the truck’s brake hose burst, causing the brakes to fail.
“Bale, crossing siya sa national highway dahil nga po traffic. Huminto 'yung SUV sa harapan at sa likod niya 'yung scooter. 'Yung 18-wheeler [truck], hindi siya nakapag-brake kaya na-salvage po ‘yung SUV, kung saan kinaladkad niya po ilang meters itong [scooter] pa-north,” PCpt. Donaldson Pagalanan, officer-in-charge of Bantay Municipal Police Station, said.
In the CCTV video, the truck’s helper was seen jumping out to wedge a wooden block under the wheels.
The SUV driver and those on the truck were unharmed.
The owner of the truck promised to pay for the hospital bills and damages.
Police reminded drivers to always check their vehicles before traveling.
“Bago po tayo magbiyahe laging tandaan natin 'yung BLOWBAGETS. Meaning i-check yung Brake, Lights, Oil, Water, Battery, Air, Gas, Engine, Tire at lalong-lalo na 'yung sarili natin at tsaka disiplina po talaga sa pagmamaneho po,” Pagalanan added.
