Several barangays in Maitum, Sarangani have experienced flooding due to the effects of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Data from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) showed that at least nine barangays were affected by the flooding.

One of the structures affected is a school building in Barangay Malalag where the first floor has not been used as classrooms because it is frequently flooded whenever it rains.

“Palagi daw binabaha o may presence talaga ng water. They’re trying to identify interventions doon kasi nga matagal na problema daw yun ng Malalag National High School,” Office of the Civil Defense (OCD)-12 Information Officer, Jorie Balmediano, said.

Motorists were also affected by flooding in front of the school.

Floodwaters subsided after a few hours.

MDRRMO is still assessing the number of families affected.

Meanwhile, a landslide was also reported along the road in Barangay Kapatan, Glan, Sarangani.

Personnel of the MDRRMO-Glan and the Department of Public Works and Highways-12 immediately conducted clearing operations.

OCD-12 said the bad weather experienced in the province was due to the ITCZ.

“Ito po kasi ng effects na experience na continuous moderate to heavy rainfall na dala ng intertropical convergence zone in Mindanao,” Balmediano added.
