The incident was reported to have occurred at about 5 a.m. on May 2, 2025.
Based on police investigation, the fishermen are both from Malingin Island, Bien Unido. One of the fishermen was taken to the hospital but was pronounced there dead on arrival.
His companion was earlier reported missing but was later retrieved by a search-and-rescue team from Bien Unido.
Further, based on the investigation, the men onboard the red motorbanca that hit a green motorbanca fled the area immediately after the incident.
Police Colonel Arnel Banzon, BPPO director, has ordered chiefs of police in the Municipalities of Bien Unido, Carlos P. Garcia, Ubay, and Talibon to conduct information verification and joint investigation on the incident.
Police Lt. Col. Norman Lobrigas Nuez, spokesperson of BPPO, thanked concerned citizens who reported the incident to the police and helped in the search-and-rescue operations, citing that participation of the community is key to solving crimes.
However, he warned netizens to be prudent in sharing information on their social media platforms, especially unverified information, as they can be charged for cyberlibel, especially when accusing persons, the authorities, or organizations of false information.
“Si PLt. Col. Nuez, mipahibalo sa katawhan nga kung aduna gani mahitabo nga krimen o insidente kinahanglan dali kini nga ipaabot sa kapulisan. Ug pinaagi niini atong matubag o maalarmahan dayon madakpan ang mga suspetsado ug aron atong mahatagan ug tinud-anay nga hustisya ang mga biktima,” the PNP Bohol press statement reads.
